Community based monitoring (CBM) has been recognised as an effective and an empowering intervention across many countries of the world. It has been recognised for fostering people’s participation to claim their rights and to ensure accountability and people oriented governance of public delivery systems. Community monitoring for accountability in health refers to the systematic review of the availability, accessibility and quality of health services against specific government commitments/standards. It is a participatory process carried-out by citizens themselves that includes the processes of social mobilisation, evidence generation leading to engagement with health providers and advocacy with policy makers with the purpose of bringing changes in services and equitable distribution of resources.
